Peter Aloysius Marquis d'Agdollo († August 27, 1800 ) was a Saxon court master .

Life

Peter Aloysius Marquis d'Agdollo was the son of Gregorio d'Agdollo, a merchant in Venice . He joined the military of the Electorate of Saxony , fought in the Seven Years War , became major in 1768, adjudant wing of Prince Xavier in 1769 and colonel of the Swiss Guard.

On June 6, 1764, he married the widow of Field Marshal Rutowski (a natural son of Augustus the Strong ), née Princess Lubomirska ; but the marriage was kept secret at Lubomirska's request because she feared for her rank at court.

Prince Xavier needed d'Agdollo for secret missions and the elector's widow, Maria Antonia , entrusted him with assignments when she was away from Dresden . Specifically, she used it in 1776 for secret negotiations with her son's ministers when it came to redeeming her 200,000 thalers in jewels in Rome and the Netherlands and relieving her from a debt of more than 700,000 thalers by assigning her future claims to the allodial Estate of the childless Elector Max III. Joseph of Bavaria to free her son.

His sudden arrest on September 16, 1776 and his removal to the Königstein Fortress caused a sensation ; he remained a prisoner of the state until his death. The reason for his arrest remained secret; the elector even withheld the cause from his ministers. Only the elector and his mother, at whose suggestion the arrest took place, knew of d'Agdollo's offense. The elector explained to his ministers that the matter was his only personal concern, had nothing to do with the inheritance matter and therefore did not belong before the Council of State. A Catholic clergyman is said to have heard d'Agdollo and orally conveyed his statements to the elector; the elector himself sentenced d'Agdollo to life imprisonment.

Some of the letters between the elector and his mother, namely a document from the marquis that allegedly contained abuse and threats, appear to have been destroyed by the elector himself. Because of the unfortunate negotiations with the Marquis d'Agdollo, the Saxon ministers Leopold Nicolaus von Ende and Count Carl von der Osten-Sacken were dismissed jointly by the Elector on March 26, 1777 and with little honor for both.
