Prince Carl von der Osten, called Sacken (born October 2, jul. / 13. October  1726 greg. In Dondangen , Duchy of Courland and Semigallia , † 31 December 1794 in Berlin ) was a Baltic German nobleman of both Saxon and Prussian minister acted.

Career

Carl von der Osten initially entered the service of the Elector of Saxony, in which he remained until 1777. He quickly made a career there after marrying into the family of the Saxon Prime Minister Brühl in 1753 . As early as 1763, he was raised to the status of hereditary imperial count by Emperor Franz I. In 1768 he was appointed Secretary of State for the Elector of Saxony and Minister of the Cabinet for Foreign Affairs. In 1777 he joined Prussian service. Here, too, he quickly reached leading offices. At first he advanced to the rank of lord of the royal chamberlain at the court of Frederick II . Then he became secret minister of state and war, and was awarded the Order of the Black Eagle on July 3, 1777 . Carl von der Osten-Sacken remained in high favor even under King Friedrich Wilhelm II . He represented Kurbrandenburg as a grand ambassador in the imperial elections in Frankfurt in 1790 and 1792. King Friedrich Wilhelm II had already elevated him to the Prussian prince's status on October 15, 1786 in recognition of his services to Prussia .

Carl von der Osten, called Sacken, died on December 31, 1794 in Berlin.

family

He was married twice: first since February 27, 1753 with Henriette Erdmuthe Eleonore Countess von Brühl (1736–1762), then since November 10, 1771 with Christiane Charlotte Sophie von Dieskau (1733–1811). From his first marriage he had a daughter Henriette (1762–1766) who died early, so that this princely branch of his family died out with him.
