Retained is an art expression in heraldry and is used in the description of the coat of arms when the heraldic animal , in particular a heraldic bird, has a differently tinged neck to the rest of the body. The representation of a heraldic animal with a differently colored neck is not common.

Further deviations in the neck of a coat of arms figure can have a collar , i.e. a collar lies around the neck. Examples are representations of the heraldic animal dog . Also ringed around the neck, with a different colored ring around the neck, is a popular modification of a figure in heraldry. This form is not to be confused with a collar. A crown pulled over the neck is called a crowned or crowned neck emblazoned .
