Behavioral and Brain Sciences is an important English-language cognitive science journal, in which articles on the subjects of psychology , neuroscience , computer science , linguistics and philosophy are published. Founded in 1978 by Stevan Harnad , the magazine is published every two months by Cambridge University Press . The Social Sciences Citation Index lists Behavioral and Brain Sciences as one of the most cited periodicals in the field of psychology.

The journal specializes in broad discussions on theoretical articles. A long article ( target article ) is followed by a series of short comments ( open peer commentary ), the length of which is limited to 1000 words. The article author has an opportunity to reply to the comments ( author's response ).

Articles to be published in the journal must undergo extensive peer review .

The comments come from "associate members" who include personalities such as John R. Anderson , Ned Block , Jean-Pierre Changeux , David Chalmers , Daniel Dennett , Steven Pinker and John Searle .
