Tombs in Behescht-e Zahra

Behescht-e Zahra (also Behescht-e Sahra ; Persian بهشت زهرا Behescht-e Zahrā , DMG behešt-e Zahrā (ʾ) , 'Paradise of Zahra ') is the central cemetery of Tehran and thus the largest cemetery in Iran . The cemetery was laid out south of the gates of Tehran under the reign of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi as a central burial place. Today it can be reached with the Tehran underground and is the largest cemetery in Iran with over 1.3 million people buried. After the Wadi as-Salam cemeteryin Iraq, it is the second largest burial site in the world with its 424 hectares.

A separate department was set up for those killed in action during the Islamic Revolution and the Iran-Iraq War . Approx. 400 burials take place every day. Many victims of the protests following the Iranian presidential elections in 2009 , including Neda Agha-Soltan , are also buried in the cemetery.

A separate mausoleum was built near the cemetery for the Khomeinis tomb on a property that had previously belonged to the family of General Iraj Matbooie.
