On both sides of the railroad was a publication from 1928 to 1933 by Wiegandt & Grieben, Berlin . The 15 issues, edited by Werner Kalmer, each have around 50 pages of special travel routes within the German Reich . Some issues saw several revised new editions, such as issue 1 from 1928, 1929 and 1933. It bears the title "Berlin - Munich via Halle - Nuremberg - Augsburg or Ingolstadt". The last issue (15, from 1932) deals with the Münster-Cologne railway line.

Both sides of the railroad were made of high quality. The editions looked like notebooks or books depending on the material of the cover. They had the unusual portrait format 1: 2. The table of contents listed all affected places, rivers, sights. At the end there was a fold-out map with routes and elevation profiles . Almost every page showed a black and white photo. With their narrative and didactic content, they were seen as demanding travel companions, which are best read during the journey or in preparation for the journey.

Issue 6 from 1929 guides readers along the railway line on the left bank of the Rhine from Cologne to Frankfurt / Man or Darmstadt. The booklet begins with “General Travel Waving”, which includes a description of the types of passenger trains and fares. It should be noted here that the dining car operated by Mitropa is available to all classes of travelers and requires seat tickets during main meal times. The edition closes with a listing of the travel agencies along the route.

Issue 5 (in the 1930 edition) describes the train journey from Amsterdam to Cologne. After passing the Zevenaar border station , the time change between Amsterdam time and Central European time is explained.

On both sides of the railroad was a publication independent of the Reichsbahn . The last edition appeared in 1933. The Reichsbahn-Werbeamt for passenger and freight traffic published a similar publication in a similar format from 1935 onwards, namely Travel and Watch .

The newspaper Deutsche Mädchenbildung commented on “Beideits vom Eisenbahnweg”, that “whoever wants to buy quality travel books while traveling by train” should take a good look at the notebooks “of the collection 'Beideits vom Eisenbahnweg', which contains the most interesting information about the city and the country in terms of geographic and cultural history”, can access.
