Additional cargo (transport)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An additional load in transport or in the transport industry usually refers to a partial load of movables that are added to a main transport.

In contrast to a conventional shipment, which is specified by the client in terms of time, an additional load is a freight which, depending on the agreement, can be carried out either within a fixed time window or completely flexibly.

Since the transports with the main freight are already cost-covering, additional loads can be cheaper or offered at marginal costs.

Probably the best known type of additional cargo is the additional cargo of air cargo in civil aviation, which mainly consists of people and their luggage. These loads are also called belly loads. The freight volume of the additional loads partly outweighs the regular transport volumes. Compared to the costs of a chartered aircraft, these are much cheaper, but have no priority over the passengers and their luggage, i. H. If after checking all passengers sufficient load capacity for freight longer exists, it must be stored until the next possibility of taking. There is usually no entitlement to take along. Additional loads are also occasionally offered in road traffic.

Transports are also increasingly being carried out as additional cargo in road freight transport. In particular if a single load does not use the entire capacity of the transport vehicle in terms of volume or weight, it makes sense to optimally use the vehicle's load capacity by adding one or more additional loads. By making maximum use of the loading capacity of trucks, empty trips and trips with low loads are avoided. This helps relieve road traffic by reducing the number of commercial vehicles. In particular in furniture and moving logistics, additional loads have already become established, as they are inexpensive for the client and result in an optimization of vehicle utilization and a reduction in costs for the entrepreneur.
