Pickling iron
The pickling iron is a sharp flat chisel used by stone masons , similar to the chisel iron , only narrower and sharper. It is used to create a first edge (pickling) on the raw stone block. This work step is necessary to prevent the edge from breaking out during further processing (secure the edge), so that the excess stone material, the bosses , which the stone masons and stone sculptors call bosses, is then removed with additional tools ( chisels , pointed chisels , etc.) can be.
The pickling iron is a historic tool that is still used today by stone masons.
