General Van (left) receives the German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen on January 21, 2016 as the commander of the Turkish Air Force Base Incirlik, which is also used by the Bundeswehr .

Bekir Ercan Van is a Turkish pilot and brigadier general in the Air Force . Until his arrest he was the commander of the Turkish NATO Incirlik Air Base . The US Air Force flew most of its attacks against the IS terrorist militia in Syria from the Incirlik air force base .

He was arrested during the attempted coup in Turkey in 2016 .
