Siege of Paris (845)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The siege of Paris in 845 was the first siege of the city by Vikings and took place under the leader Reginheri . The Northmen went up the Seine in about 120 ships , devastating the banks without resistance. Despite the formation of an army, the West Franconian King Charles the Bald considered a fight hopeless and concluded contracts with the Vikings for the payment of 7,000 pounds of silver, which resulted in their provisional withdrawal. The temptation to extort ransom again, however, led to further raids on the city every few years, which culminated in the almost one-year siege of 885/886 .
