The siege artillery is an evolution of artillery that are particularly destructive to cities and other fortifications was due to their increased reach and its destruction radius. It was a common part of larger armed forces. A well-known example from the First World War is the destruction of the Belgian city of Ypres by German siege artillery . With the help of siege artillery, attempts were made to destroy walls or to force the occupation on the other side to abandon the city or fortress. The latter was achieved through hollow projectiles (grenades) that were shot into the fortress area in order to force the crew to give up due to the scattered charge of the exploding grenade.
