The Belgenbacher Mühle is located between Imgenbroich and Eicherscheid in the valley on the Belgenbach . The valley is cut about 130 m deep in a V-shape.

The Belgenbacher Mühle was built in 1544 as a successor to the original mill , 1 km further upstream. Today it was rebuilt by the "Eifel pastor" Josef Bayer and used at times as a Catholic youth home. Parts of the buildings are now rented out as holiday homes. The buildings are under monument protection , registered in Monschau under the number 338 .

history

The Belgenbache Mühle, also called Eicherscheider Mühle, was probably built around 1300, but in a place further upstream. It was first mentioned around 1306 in a contract between Count Reinhard von Montjoie and Falkenburg. It was rebuilt at its current location around 1544, probably because more water was available through more streams. According to the royal mill shelf, the Belgenbacher Mühle was one of four ban mills for the area until around 1700 . In this sovereign right, the landlords were assured the sole right to build and operate a mill and forced the farmers of the neighboring areas to have their grain ground only here.

From 1892 to 1926, a sawmill was operated here in addition to the grinding mill. The mill itself only ran on demand from 1912 to 1926. In 1931 the Aachen parish of St. Peter leased the mill and converted it into a Catholic youth home. A year later she was able to take in up to 25 children. On the other side of the stream, in the Eicherscheider area, a chapel was built according to plans by the Aachen cathedral master builder Felix Kreusch and consecrated on August 12, 1934. A year later the youth home was closed by the Gestapo and could not be reopened until 1947. In 1952 the old grinder was expanded and the mill was restored as a country home for young people. In 1964 the diocese of Aachen took over the building complex because it was no longer profitable to run it as a youth home and the facility was hardly used and fell into disrepair. The building and the land belonging to it were later sold to private individuals who fundamentally restored the building complex and partially converted it into holiday apartments.
