Belle Isle is the largest of 18 islands in Lake Windermere in the English Lake District and the only one that has ever been inhabited. It is around 1.5 km long.
The Roman governor of Ambleside built a villa on the island. During the English Civil War it served as a base for the royalists. For a long time the island was only called "Great Island", but after it was acquired privately, it was renamed Belle Isle.
