Ben Nevis is a whiskey distillery near Fort William , Inverness-shire , Scotland , UK .
history
The distillery at the foot of Ben Nevis , whose name it has taken, was founded in 1825 by "Long" John MacDonald. After his death in 1856, his son Donald took over the distillery. The buildings of the former Nevis Distillery, founded in 1878 by Donald P. MacDonald, have been used as warehouses since 1908 . In 1955 the distillery came into the possession of the Canadian millionaire Joseph W. Hobbs, who had a Coffey Still built in , which was dismantled in 1971 . This was the first time that grain whiskey could be produced in a distillery in addition to malt . In 1978 production was stopped. In 1981 Joseph Hobbs Jr. sold. the distillery to Long John Distillers and Whitbread , which resumed production in 1984, but stopped again in 1986. In 1989 Nikka took over the distillery. Production has been resuming since 1990.
production
The water of the distillery, which belongs to the Highlands / Western Highlands region, comes from the Allt A Mhullin Burn. It has a mash tun ( 9.5 t) made of stainless steel and six fermentation vats (wash backs) (together 300,000 l). Distillation takes place in two wash stills (together 50,000 l) and two spirit stills (together 40,000 l) which are heated using steam spirals.
