Benedictine convent Augsburg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Benedictine Monastery Augsburg ( patron saint St. Nicholas) was a monastery of the Benedictine nuns in Augsburg . It was located in the southeast of the city outside the fortification (so-called semolina ). The monastery consisted of a house with a courtyard and the St. Nikolaus chapel and was handed over to a group of pious women by the Benedictine abbey of St. Ulrich and Afra in 1262 . These were based on the rules of St. Benedict out of gratitude for the donation. In the years 1442 and 1443 a renovation was carried out by the monastery of St. Ulrich and Afra. The monastery split off from Ortisei and Afra in 1487 in order to gain more independence. This step made it easier for the council to repeal it during the Reformation in 1537 .

The exact location of the monastery is not known, there are no remains. The poor settlement on Grieß, in which the monastery was also located, was roughly between the Red Gate and the Schwibbogentor outside the city wall.
