Candle arch gate

The Schwibbogentor in 1865

The Schwibbogentor was a city gate of the former ring wall of Augsburg and was located in the southeast of the old town at the point where a Lech canal, the Schwalllech , was led into the city by means of a Schwibbogen bridge as an aqueduct over the moat.

The first written mention of the candle arch gate comes from the year 1322, in which the gate served as a city exit in the direction of Friedberg or Munich. In 1369 the city gate was demolished and replaced by a larger new building with a front gate. In the 17th century the tower was renewed and based on the architectural style of Elias Holl , although he was not involved in the renovation. In 1867 the candle arch, like some other gates in Augsburg, was demolished due to the increased traffic.

The Schwalllech now flows under the street at this point and comes back to light in Schwibbogengasse.
