Benedictine convent Peppingen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Peppingen Benedictine Monastery (Luxembourgish: Klouschter Peppeng ) has been a monastery of the Benedictine Sisters of the Holy Sacrament in Peppange, Roeser municipality , in Luxembourg since 1883 .

history

The sisters of the Trier Benedictine monastery in Gartenfeld moved from 1875 to 1888 because of the culture war, first to Bettembourg and in 1883 to Peppingen (French: Peppange , now part of Roeser ) in Luxembourg. Then some returned to Trier. For the part of the convent that remained in Peppingen, the Luxembourg architect Sosthène Weis (1872–1941) built the Bethlehem Monastery in the neo-Gothic style in 1904, the chapel of which was painted in 1928 by the Benedictine artist Notker Becker . During the Second World War, the nuns were deported to Germany, the buildings were used for other purposes and the paintings were whitewashed. Today they have been restored and are under monument protection (since 2007). The last sister living in the monastery, Marie-Joseph Max (* 1927, joined 1952), died in 2017. The monastery ( Rue Saint Benoît 3) is currently run by an association.

Establishment of manufacture

In 1899, Peppingen founded a subpriorate in the Westphalian town of Herstelle , which was elevated to the status of Herstelle Abbey in 1924 and incorporated into another congregation.
