Benevides Correia Barros

Benevides Correia Barros is an East Timorese lawyer.

Career

As a student, Barros became involved in the East Timorese independence movement in the 1990s. While taking photos in a field in Maliana , he was caught and allegedly tortured by Indonesian soldiers on September 13, 1993 . He was released about two weeks later. According to the government, he was arrested again on October 15 in Baucau and sentenced to two months in prison.

In 1998, Barros took part in a peaceful demonstration by about a thousand East Timorese students in the Indonesian capital Jakarta , where they demanded independence for their homeland. The Indonesian military violently broke up the demonstration. Like others, Barros was arrested but released.

In 1999 the Indonesians withdrew from East Timor. Barros became a lawyer and president of the East Timorese Bar Association . On August 27, 2007 Barros was elected by the National Parliament of East Timor as a representative of the Partido Democrático (PD) for five years as a member of the State Council.

In 2007 Barros represented the rebel Alfredo Alves Reinado as a lawyer in negotiations with the government to settle the conflict.
