Benjamin Coelho

Benjamin Coelho (* in Tatuí ) is a Brazilian bassoonist and music teacher .

Coelho earned a bachelor's degree from Purchase College Conservatory of Music and a master's degree from Manhattan School of Music . Before becoming professor of bassoon at the University of Iowa in 1998 , he was vice dean and professor at the Universidade do Estado de Minas Gerais and was principal bassoonist in the symphony orchestras of Rio de Janeiro, Campinas and Belo Horizonte.

As a chamber musician, Coelho has performed with the Brazilian Gramado Wind Quintet , the Minas Gerais Ensemble for New Music and the New York Alaria Chamber Ensemble . With the Ensemble Wizards! A Double Reed Consort he recorded two CDs. He is a founding member of the Manhattan Wind Quintet , with which he won several chamber music competitions and in 1987 gave a sold-out concert at Carnegie Recital Hall . As a soloist, orchestral musician and bassoon teacher, he worked in Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Portugal, France, Romania, Australia, Canada and the Czech Republic. He is particularly interested in new music; he commissioned several compositions from contemporary composers, the premieres of which he played and recorded.
