Bennett's fracture on X-ray

The Bennett fracture (also known as Bennett dislocation fracture ) is a fracture at the base of the first metacarpal bone that extends into the thumb saddle joint . The metacarpal bone is moved proximally by the tension of the tendon of the abductor pollicis longus that attaches here . Usually a smaller triangular fragment remains ulnar at the joint.

Accident mechanism

The fracture usually arises from a compression trauma on the adducted thumb.

therapy

The reduction is performed with abduction of the thumb. Depending on the result of the reduction, conservative immobilization (plaster cast) or surgical stabilization is carried out.

Differential diagnosis

Rolando fracture on the X-ray

The Bennett fracture must be distinguished from fractures of the base of the first metacarpal bone that do not pull into the joint ( Winterstein fracture ). A Bennett fracture with a debris fracture is called a Rolando fracture .
