Berastagi (sometimes also: Brastagi ) is a city on the Indonesian island of Sumatra .

Berastagi is located in the northwest of Sumatra (province of Sumatra Utara ) to 1,330 meters above sea level on the edge of the Toba highlands, 66 kilometers southwest of Medan and about 50 km northeast of the Lake Toba . Because of the pleasant climate, the Dutch came from the swampy coastal plains to relax as early as the 1920s and to set up a rural retreat. Today wealthy Medans build weekend homes.

Karo- Batak predominantly live in the city . The city belongs to the administrative district of Karo , the capital of which is Kabanjahe 11 km south.

The area impresses with two volcanoes: the 2,095 m high Gunung Sibayak and in the northwest the 2,454 m high Gunung Sinabung .
