A Bergère (Fr .:, shepherdess') is a women's hat of the 18th century .

The Bergère is characterized by a wide, flat brim and a small, low cup. It does not enclose the head, but sits on top of the head, where it has to be attached with the help of straps and / or hat pins. It is almost always made of straw and worn over a hood .

It probably came into fashion during the first half of the century due to the shepherd romance popular in the 18th century (see also Schäferspiele ) and was the only female hat shape ( apart from national costumes ) until around 1780 .
