The Mining and Huts Association (BuH-Verein) in Aachen , Berlin , Clausthal and Freiberg goes back to the "Association for Miners and Huts in Berlin" founded by mountain experts in 1861.

organization

The BiH-Verein is organized as an association of study-oriented scientific associations at the four locations and an association of old men. The active clubs are independent in the organization of their club life and in the selection of new members. Preservation and promotion of mining culture are a central concern of the association, which among other things has published a “songbook for miners and smelters” since 1862, currently in its 15th edition. The connection is open to students of science and engineering science disciplines of all backgrounds and emphasizes study oriented, not hitting , not color-supporting , dachverbandslos and cosmopolitan aligned.

Alignment

At the Berlin Bergakademie, the BiH-Verein had a hegemonic position until 1918; the mountain students were almost exclusively associated in the mining and smelting associations. Competition arose from the association from the Agricola Academic Association or Academic Association Schlägel und Eisen, founded in 1878, with which, however, good relationships have been maintained ever since; joint events of the old men’s associations and the activities prove this.

Through friendly contacts in the free time - for example on excursions and joint ventures - the bonds between the association members of the BiH association took on permanent traits.

The association was originally effective and established a so-called honorary court (later honorary council ) in 1877/78 . Numerous honorary agreements, honorary trades and honorary orders indicate an orientation towards the student corps; In 1883, the statutes stipulated that easy lengths were to be fenced on corps weapons of the Kösener SC , while heavy lengths were specified with black weapons (sabers). After the Second World War, the scales were not resumed, and women were already admitted in the 1990s. The current guidelines emphasize an international orientation and a liberal-free, tolerance-based attitude without the association being bound to parties and world views.

1861-1935

Between 1861 and 2015 the association had around 1,600 members. In 1928 an "old gentlemen's association of the Mining and Hüttenmännischer Verein" was founded in Berlin. In 1935, the Aktivitas of the BiH-Verein was incorporated into the Nationalist Student Union as a comradeship as part of the Gleichschaltung; the old gentlemen's association was affiliated to the NS old gentlemen's association.

Re-establishment in 1946

The BuH-Verein was re-established in 1946 at the Technical University of Aachen. In addition, the "Academic Association for Miners and Huts" were founded in Clausthal (1949) and the "Association for Miners and Huts" at the Technical University in Berlin-Charlottenburg. These three active associations merged on September 19, 1954 with a common old rulership under the name "Berg- und Hüttenmännischer Verein".

The BiH-Verein was founded in the first heyday of the societies in the second half of the 19th century. The self-image of its members is of particular historical interest.

effect

The self-image of the BiH association and the professional group of senior mountain and hut officials themselves had considerable social consequences. For a long time, the assessors were guided by the patriarchal master-of-the-house understanding of the Ruhr barons. At the same time, they were concerned with extensive company social facilities (such as health insurances or dormitories) to create loyalty among the workers, but to prevent collective representation of interests or trade union organization.

The self-confidence of the civil service professional group also corresponded to their position on the mines and an authoritarian, bossy and harshly direct demeanor. At the same time, according to the motto pure, simple and loyal! Little obsessed with the title, from Christian Dütting , a prominent member, is passed down in the memoirs of his daughter:

“Father only allowed himself to be called“ Herr Assessor ”, never“ Director ”or even“ General Manager ”. That was not out of exaggerated modesty - Father had a very healthy self-confidence! - he said: "You can also be the director of the Flea Circus."

This self-image was to be observed above all against the background of the growing industry and the expanding coal mining from the end of the 19th century to the Weimar period and National Socialism. After that, with the reconstitution of the association after 1945 and the changes in the course of increasing technical professionalization and the coal crisis, there were multiple realignments.

Embossing of the members

For the members of the Mining and Hüttenmännischer Verein (Mining and Hüttenmännischer Verein), their studies - initially partly at the Berlin University, later only at the Berlin Bergakademie - had a strong impact. The mining student corporations, first and foremost the association, played a major role in this formation process. Characteristic for these corporations was the complete integration of the members in a collective, putting aside personal needs and freedoms in connection with rules of behavior and interpretation. The special spirit of the corps is particularly evident in the context of the club's internal festival culture, which took on special and independent forms between mining customs, official duties and civic “class awareness”.
