Bergantini was a well-respected family of Italian potters in Faenza during the first half of the 16th century .

Two lines are known. The better known are the brothers Pietro and Paolo, who ran a workshop in the Cappella di S. Vitale . Pietro's son, Felice, continued the trade as the sole heir from 1540 until his death on December 29, 1558.

Paolo Bergantini belongs to the other line. He ran his own workshop, which was later taken over by his son Bartolino and continued until 1547.

The Bergantini worked closely with other local ceramic masters of their time, the Pirotti, the Manara, and the Viani brothers.

One of the main periods of Faenzin majolica art began around 1520-30 through their products . They coined the techniques "a berettino" (light blue glass ground, then the ornamentation especially in shades of yellow) and "sopra azzurro" (dark blue painted glass ground with recessed and white raised ornaments).

Works

  • The most famous and at the same time only, unequivocally attributable work is the so-called Coppa Bergantini (Bergantini bowl). It is a bowl with a base and a curved rim. The diameter is 27 cm, the height 11.5 cm. It is a blue berettina majolica, created by an anonymous master from Pietro Bergantini's workshop. The main motif is the depiction of the heroic self-sacrifice of Marcus Curtius in the Roman Forum (Livio, Ab urbe condita, VII, 6). The base of the bowl bears the inscription: FATA.IN.FAENZA.I.LABOTEGA / DE.M ° .PIERE.BERGATIO.M.CCCCC / 1529 ADI 17 DT ZUGNO (made in Faenza in the workshop of the master Pietro Bergantini 1500. 1529 today, on the 17th of June). The Coppa Bergantini is exhibited in the Museo Internazionale delle Ceramiche in Faenza.

Numerous other majolica and fragments have been assigned to the workshop or to the same master due to stylistic features:

  • Bowl with School of Athens, 1524 (Pinacoteca di Arezzo)
  • Panel with the Adoration of the Magi, 1525 (Kunstgewerbemuseum, Berlin)
  • Bowl with the battle between Laphites and Centaurs, coat of arms of the Guiccardini-Salviati, 1525 (British Museum, London)
  • Panel with Our Lady and Saints, 1525-30 (British Museum, London)
  • Panel with the Adoration of the Magi, 1527 (Rijks Museum, Amsterdam)
  • Plate with Judgment of Paris and Grotesques, 1527 (Victoria and Albert Museum, London)
  • Panel with flagellation of Christ, 1529 (Musée d'Art et d'Histoire, Geneva)
  • Plate with Turkey and Salviati Coat of Arms (part of a service), c.1531 (British Museum, London)
