The Oelsnitz / Erzgebirge Mining Museum is a mining museum located in the former “Karl Liebknecht” coal mine in the Oelsnitz town of Oelsnitz . The carrier is the kul (T) our company of the Erzgebirgskreis .

Mining museum

In 1967 a "conception for the construction of a technical monument with a museum character about the development of the productive forces of the hard coal mining of the GDR" was decided. From 1976 onwards, part of the daytime facilities was transformed into the “Karl-Liebknecht-Schacht” mining museum and opened to the public on July 4, 1986. In January 2018, the City Council of Oelsnitz / Erzgeb. the plans for the renovation and conversion of the museum complex were presented. These provide for the renovation of the building with the winding tower, the addition of an entrance foyer and the redesign of the entire museum tour, including the escape and rescue routes, in the coming years. A good 17 million euros are budgeted for the renovation.

The current mining museum comprises four main areas:

Oelsnitz, mining museum with steam locomotive (2016)

This locomotive was reconstructed from the BR 52 3252 in November 1967 , and the manufacturer named Jung (11263/1944). Subsequent stationings were Bw Templin (December 1, 1967 - October 2, 1968), Bw Pasewalk (October 3, 1968 - October 4, 1968), Templin (October 5, 1968 - December 31, 1971), Neustrelitz (1. January 1972 - January 29, 1973) and Bw Zittau (January 30, 1973 - May 24, 1988). There she was z-posted on May 25, 1988 and retired and sold on November 3, 1992. In December 1996 the mining museum finally bought the locomotive, where it was externally refurbished in 1997/1998 and is now an example of the many coal trains.

Others

On February 27, 2015, the one millionth visitor since the museum opened. The Oelsnitz / Erzgebirge Mining Museum was originally one of the selected sites in the UNESCO World Heritage application for the Erzgebirge mining region . The museum complex has been listed as one of the associated sites since June 2017. The museum will be one of the six locations of the 4th Saxon State Exhibition 2020 under the main theme Industry-Culture-Saxony .
