The Berger de Savoie , also Berger des Alpes , is a rare breed of dog.

Origin and history

The Berger de Savoie is a breed of dog on the verge of extinction. His home is in Provence , France . His job was to guard cattle, goats and the flock of sheep. After the Second World War, the population shrank to a few specimens, and there are currently around 100 animals in France. The breed is not recognized by the FCI . In 2001, the Société du berger de Savoie association was founded in France with the aim of saving the breed. He wants to define a standard and try to get the breed recognized by the FCI.

The Berger de Savoie is a strong, medium-sized (up to 58 cm, 35 kg) dog with a prominent head and small tilted ears. The body is compact and seems longer than it is tall. He has muscular legs with large paws with double dewclaws on the hind paws. The fur is stick-haired, dense, with an undercoat, in the colors black / brown or "harlequin" (three-colored).

The Berger de Savoie is a lovable figure, a bit stubborn, and needs consistent but sensitive upbringing. He is an attentive family and watchdog.
