The mountain lake is a small lake at 382 m. ü. M. within the city of Bad Säckingen in the German state Baden-Wuerttemberg . It is a natural lake up to 13 m deep, which was changed by human hands in 1802 and 1803. The Black Lake , as it was called at that time, received water from the Schöpfebach through an underground channel . On the eastern bank, an artificial drain was created that served a commercial zone that no longer exists today. A lot of wastewater ended up in the lake until the sewage treatment plants were expanded in the 1980s .

An overturning of the lake to prevent an artificial ventilation system is installed for the 1985th

Joseph Viktor von Scheffel experienced the water as a natural idyll around 1850 and this is how his work Der Trompeter von Säckingen was created . From 1873 the mountain lake developed into a popular excursion destination, surrounded by wooded area. The watchmaker Constantin Maier opened a restaurant that year, then known as a pub .

Today there is a restaurant on the southern bank.
