Berkely Mather
Berkely Mather (born February 25, 1909 in Gloucester , † March 7, 1996 ) was a British writer.
Life
Berkely Mather is the pseudonym for the writer John Evan Weston-Davies . Before the First World War , Mather emigrated to Australia with his family . There he spent his childhood and school days and studied medicine at the University of Sydney . He later returned to Great Britain but was unable to really gain a foothold there.
His first literary attempts date from the time after the First World War. Over time, he was able to publish more and more stories or novellas in magazines such as The Bystander . In 1934 he volunteered for the British Indian Army . In 1938 he married Kay Jones († 1991) and had a daughter and two sons with her.
During the Second World War , Mather fought under the leadership of William Slim, 1st Viscount Slim in the Kingdom of Iraq . After the war ended in 1945 he went back to British India with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel (Lieutenant Colonel) . When the Mountbatten Plan came into effect on August 15, 1947 ( Indian Independence Day ) , Mather moved to the Royal Artillery and returned to Great Britain.
In 1959 Mather was retired and from then on devoted himself only to his literary work.
Berkely Mather died on March 7, 1996, ten days after his 87th birthday.
