Berkshire and Hampshire Railway

The Berkshire and Hampshire Railway , also Berks and Hants Railway , was a railway company in England in the county of Berkshire , west of London.

The company was founded on June 30, 1845 by the Great Western Railway and taken over on May 14, 1846 by the GWR.

On December 21, 1847 the railway line from Reading to Hungerford , as a continuation of the Newbury line of the GWR, opened, on November 1, 1848 the line from Reading (Southcote Junction) to Basingstoke followed . The lines, which were first carried out in broad gauge of 2.140 meters, were nailed to standard gauge of 1.435 meters on July 21, 1873.
