The Berlin School for Experimental Psychology was headed by Carl Stumpf , a student of Franz Brentano and Rudolf Hermann Lotze . As a professor at the University of Berlin , Carl Stumpf founded the Berlin Institute for Experimental Psychology in 1893.

Stumpf's best-known students are Max Wertheimer , Kurt Koffka , Wolfgang Köhler and Kurt Lewin .

After Wolfgang Köhler took over the management of the institute in 1922, the Berlin School became a de facto school of Gestalt psychology .
