The Berlin theme is a term from chess composition .
A white attack in a direct mate task does not lead to the goal simply because black reaches mate faster than white. In the example, the audition leads to 1. Bf7? to the immediate Matt White of the first ... T a3 matte . The black mate move is devalued in the solution by one or more additional maneuvers of any kind to a harmless check. In the example exercise, this is done using a preliminary plan with a rook sacrifice so that the white king can enter the b5 square. 1. Th5 + Kg6 2. Th6 + Kxh6 3. Bf7 Ta3 + 4. Kb5 5. g5 mate.
The suggestion for the Berlin topic goes back to Wolfram Seibt , who illustrated the topic for the internationally advertised composition tournament in the Deutsche Schachblättern from March 1975 with an example.
