Bernardo Piñango

Bernardo José Piñango Figuera (born February 9, 1960 in Caracas ) is a former Venezuelan boxer in superbantam and bantamweight .

amateur

At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow , Piñango won his first four bantamweight fights against Ernesto Alguera ( Nicaragua ), Veli Koota ( Finland ), John Siryakibbe ( Uganda ) and Dumitru Cipere ( Romania ) and reached the final against the Cuban Juan Bautista Hernández , to which he was subject to points. His silver medal was the only medal for Venezuela in the 1980 Olympics.

On August 1, 1981, he made his professional debut and boxed only a draw. On June 4, 1986, he became the bantamweight world champion of the WBA when he beat Benito Badilla by unanimous judge decision. He defended this belt three times. In 1987 he resigned the title and switched to super bantamweight.

At the end of February 1988 he boxed in this weight class against Julio Gervacio for the WBA World Championship and won by a split point decision. However, he lost the title in his first title defense at the end of May of the same year against Juan José Estrada on points.
