Bernese Sunday costume

The Berner costume , also black Berner costume , Berner Sunday costume or Berner festive costume , is a Swiss folk costume that is still worn by Bernese women on festive occasions. It has remained practically unchanged since the second half of the 19th century.

description

It consists of a black pleated skirt (called a smock) and a bodice , including a white shirt that is pleated at the front and has wide puffed sleeves that reach to the elbows. A black goller is worn over the shirt . The bodice is provided with buttons and chains of silver filigree decorated, and Göllerlifte include silver Göllerlifte chains, which are attached front and rear with a pin made of silver filigree. Another brooch made of silver filigree is attached to the front in the middle of the goller. A single-colored half-apron made of silk damask is worn, usually in a bright color. Long lace trousers, an underskirt and white knee socks with a lace pattern are worn underneath . The complete costume includes a black bonnet with horsehair tips that protrude from the head in a semicircle and black lace gloves, with a small bouquet of flowers often worn in the bodice.

variants

In addition to the black Bern costume, there are a few other Bern costumes:

  • the Tschöplitracht (Tschöpli = jacket), damask silk apron in the basic color black, possibly with a flower pattern, often blue or red. The bodice has long sleeves made of the same material as the apron or, alternatively, only made of black damask silk. For very special occasions such as B. as bride or god in church.
  • the colored Münger costume (after the painter Rudolf Münger , who designed it at the beginning of the 20th century): similar to the black Berner costume, but with colored silk inserts in the bodice and göller and less heavy silver jewelry.
  • the Gotthelftracht (after Jeremias Gotthelf ), a simpler version of the Berner costume: No silver jewelry, no Göller, the apron is made of raw silk or cotton (striped pattern) and a straw hat is worn instead of the lace cap.
