Bernhard Simon (entrepreneur)

Bernhard Simon (* 1960 in Kempten (Allgäu) ) is a German entrepreneur and business manager . Until the end of 2020, he will be CEO of the international logistics service provider Dachser .

Life

Simon is the grandson of Thomas Dachser and nephew of the psychoanalyst Christa Rohde-Dachser . After graduating from high school in Kempten, he completed an apprenticeship as a freight forwarder at Dachser. In 1987 he graduated in Business Administration at the University of Nuremberg with a diploma. In 1996 he completed a Senior Executive Program at Harvard .

In 1989, Simon joined Dachser as a project manager for European transport. In 1993 he became division manager for the European freight forwarding organization. Since 1995 he has been Head of Corporate Development, from 1996 in charge of the entire European sales organization, first as a division manager, from 1999 as a member of the management.

Bernhard Simon has been the management spokesman since January 1st, 2005, representing the third generation of his family at the top of the company after 15 years of external management.

Simon has played a key role in Dachser's expansion strategy since 2006, its implementation and the successful integration of acquired companies into the corporate structure. He has made the family business highly international through organic growth and acquisitions. Particularly noteworthy are the large national organizations France with Graveleau in 1999 and Spain with Azkar at the end of 2012.

At the end of 2020, Simon will retire from operational management and will take on the role of Chairman of the Board of Directors at Dachser in 2021. Burkhard Eling, current Head of Finance at Dachser, will then take over as Chairman of the Board of Management.

Act

In 2004, Bernhard Simon and Werner Kirsch drove the development of a modern corporate governance structure at Dachser, which resulted in a new partnership agreement in 2007.

He runs the family business according to the motto “First the company, then the family”. Under his management, Dachser is one of the 50 largest German family businesses.

Social Commitment

Bernhard Simon is committed to the terre des hommes children's aid organization. In 1988, Bernhard Simon led a development aid project in Brazil lasting several months for a local organization.

In view of the influx of refugees to Europe and the ever new tragedies on the Mediterranean, Simon calls for a rethinking of immigration policy. Logistics service providers should take security precautions to counter human smuggling in the countries of origin and help young refugees in this country to integrate.

Awards

In 2008, Bernhard Simon received the Logistics, Excellence, Optimization Award (LEO) in the category “Entrepreneur of the Year” from the Deutsche Verkehrszeitung . Also in 2008, the INTES Academy for Family Businesses and the Impulse magazine named Bernhard Simon “Family Business Owner of the Year”.
