This art prize was created in 1969 out of a love of art - initially a citizen prize as a privately conceived and financed artist promotion. The art prize, initially endowed with DM 1,200, was donated for five years by the cheese manufacturer and artist Karl Hoefelmayr (1907–1989) until 35 years ago the Kempten transport company Thomas Dachser accepted the award. Since his death, the Dachser family company has donated the art prize, which has been called the Thomas Dachser Memorial Prize since 1981 and is now endowed with € 4,000.
