Bernus is the name of a German and Austrian noble family.

Members of the Protestant family came as religious refugees from Italy in 1682 via Liège and Hanau to Frankfurt am Main . In the latter city, the Bernus were among the most respected and wealthiest families. In 1793 they acquired the Bockenheimer Schloss and park . The Prussian line begins with Andreas Ludwig (Louis) Bernus (1832–1913). The latter was raised to the nobility on January 27, 1912. Franz Alfred Jacob Bernus married in 1836 Marie du Fay and in 1863 by Franz Joseph I in the Austrian baron ennobled . Friedrich Alexander von Bernus (1838–1908) inherited the secularized Neuburg monastery . The facility remained in the possession of Alexander von Bernus, b. Grashey , (adopted son of Friedrich Alexander von Bernus), who acquired Donaumünster Castle as a summer residence in 1921 , later used it as his permanent residence. In 1928, Eschenau Castle came into the possession of Alexander von Bernus, whose descendants are now the owners of the castle. The latter was enrolled in the Baden Freiherrnstand in 1885.
