The Besht Yeshiva Dresden is a rabbinical seminar and a teaching school and thus the first corresponding new establishment in East Germany after the Shoah and the first liberal Hasidic yeschiva in the world. It was named after the founder of the Hasidic movement Baal Shem Tov and is located in Dresden .

Foundation and goals

In April 2020, Rabbi Akiva Weingarten founded the Besht Yeshiva Dresden association with the aim of giving Jewish dropouts from ultra-Orthodox communities the opportunity to live their Jewishness in a liberal way and to pass on their deep traditional knowledge. The Yeshiva is open to everyone and offers Talmud lessons and Hebrew courses . In this way, Jewish life in Dresden should become visible and natural again. Besht is an acronym of the name of the founder of the Hasidic movement Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov (1700-1760).

The yeshiva is led by Rabbi Akiva Weingarten, Rabbi Shmuel Papenheim and Rabbi Shlomo Tikochinsky. Besht Dresden creates networks within the city in the areas of education, health, technology, industry, culture and society in order to exchange knowledge and to network with citizens and institutions of Dresden.

background

Rabbi Akiva Weingarten, an ex- Satmarer from New York, used his experience as a so-called "OTD" (someone who is off the ultra-orthodox path) to help other dropouts find a new way for themselves. Besht Yeshiva Dresden is particularly active in Dresden, but is expected to expand worldwide in the future. Besht Yeshiva Dresden cooperates with the Jewish community in Dresden , the liberal Jewish community "Migwan" in Basel and the TU Dresden .
