Betalipoprotein

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the medical literature, the term betalipoprotein (s) is generally used synonymously with the combination of “ low density lipoprotein(LDL) and “ very low density lipoprotein(VLDL) . Strictly speaking, this synonymous use is not correct from a laboratory chemical point of view either.

In column chromatography , the proportions of the lipoproteins are essentially represented as beta lipoproteins ( i.e. β bands) , which correspond to the LDL and VLDL in ultracentrifugation . The β-band can in turn be subdivided, which is why LDL is also referred to as betalipoprotein and VLDL as pre-betalipoprotein. In terms of laboratory chemistry, however, there is no strict identity between the terms "betalipoproteins" and "LDL / VLDL" because of the completely different test methods.
