Entrance to the Church of Betfage

Betfage (older spelling: Bethphage ; ancient Greek Βηθφαγή ; Aramaic בית פגי; in German about 'Feigenhausen', literally 'house of unripe figs') is a place in ancient Israel , near Jerusalem .

description

Betfage is mentioned in the synoptic stories of the Passion ( Mt 21.1 f.  EU , Mk 11.1 f.  EU , Lk 19.28–30  EU ). Accordingly, Jesus sent two of his disciples to the village to fetch a young donkey that he wanted to ride into Jerusalem . These passages locate prayers on the Mount of Olives , a little off the Roman road that led from Jericho to Jerusalem.

Today a Franciscan monastery and a church are called Betfage, which is probably roughly on the site of the earlier settlement. On the site of the monastery, agricultural facilities and graves from the period between the 2nd century BC were found. BC and the 8th century AD, including symbols on a tombstone that indicate Jewish Christian settlement in the 3rd century AD.
