Betteweer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Betteweer (also Bettewehr ) was a church village on the Ems. It was located southwest of Rysum in what is now the urban area of Emden in East Frisia . The original village was dammed up as early as 1590 after devastating storm surges. A successor settlement (Bettewehr II) was built to the north-east from 1605, which was so badly damaged in the course of the Christmas flood in 1717 that it was also dammed in 1720. The New Year flood of 1721 destroyed the last remnants of the place. Both the original and the successor settlement are now again within the dike line. On the southern bank of the Mahlbusen , a monument commemorates Bettewehr II.
