Beylerbey
The Beylerbey , also Bejlerbej ( Ottoman بكلربكی Beylerbeyi , formerly Beglerbeg ), referred to the most important of the provincial governors in the Ottoman Empire . The word "Beylerbey" comes from the Turkish word Bey and means "Lord of Lords". It is also written Bejlerbej, Beglerbeg or Beilerbei.
The administrative area of a Beylerbey corresponded to the later common Eyâlet .
history
The first was Beylerbey of I. Sultan Murad appointed. It was Lala Şahin Pasha , the Beylerbey of Rumelia . In 1393 the office of the Beylerbeys of Anatolia was established. These two Beylerbeys were at the forefront of all eyâlets , vilayets and sandschaks in their respective spheres of influence, i.e. the European and Asian parts of the empire. Only the viziers had a higher rank. During the heyday of the Ottoman Empire, numerous additional and smaller Beylerbeyliks were founded as a result of the conquests . This also decreased the relative power and prestige of the Beylerbeys.
