Bhava is the Sanskrit ( भव ) and Pali word for “habitual tendencies” or “the process of being”, derived from the root bhū . It has many meanings.

In Indian mythology, Bhava is a Vedic deity identified with Sharva . Later an epithet or a manifestation of Rudra or Shiva .

In Indian music , bhava means the state of health, the psychological state ( rasa ) that an artist turns outward, i.e. the artistic expression.

In Buddhism , bhava means the continuity of being beyond life and death. It breaks down into

  • kama-bhava: habitual tendencies in the five senses,
  • rupa-bhava: habitual tendencies in the supersensible, subtle heavenly world,
  • arupa-bhava: habitual tendencies in the incorporeal celestial world.
