Beaver Wars

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Beaver Wars , also known as the French and Iroquois Wars , were an uninterrupted series of conflicts that took place in eastern North America between 1640 and 1701 between the Iroquois Confederation and its neighboring tribes allied with France . The Iroquois tried to extend their territory to the territory of the neighboring tribes, mainly Algonquians , in order to be able to act as an intermediary in the fur trade between the French and the western tribes.

The wars were marked by extreme brutality on both sides and are considered to be one of the bloodiest clashes in North American history. The expansion of the Iroquois under the leadership of the Mohawk tribe and the expulsion of the inferior tribes changed the tribal geography throughout North America.

The clashes began around 1640 and ended in 1701 with the Great Peace of Montreal . The Shawnee , Delaware, and Dakota tribes were affected, among many others . After the loss of their Dutch trading partners, the Iroquois' desire to expand subsided.
