The Biblioteca Joanina is a library belonging to the university library of the Portuguese University of Coimbra . It was in the 18th century by the then King of Portugal John V commissioned. From 1717 to 1728 it was built by the master builder João Carvalho Ferreira . The library is located in the law faculty of the university and is considered an important building and masterpiece of the baroque era . The entrance is adorned by a magnificent portal. The library's holdings include over 200,000 precious books from antiquity to early modern times in three interconnected halls. The black room, made of ebony with gold decorations, contains works of antiquity, the red room with mahogany and rosewood, works of science and the green room of philosophy and theology.

In 2013, the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph counted them among the most spectacular libraries in the world.
