Bibliotheca buddhica

The Bibliotheca Buddhica is an academy founded in St. Petersburg in 1897 for the collection and publication of original Buddhist texts and translations.

The founding was initiated by Sergei Oldenburg , who had already researched Buddhist literature for several years and developed the idea of ​​collecting both his own research results and those of other researchers in the field of Indology and Buddhology centrally and thus bundling the knowledge gained and making it more usable close.

He invited researchers from different European countries to take part in the project; this met with a great response and he published Cikshasamuccaya as his first work with a foreword by the English Indologist Cecil Bendal . His work was continued u. a. by Fyodor Ippolitowitsch Shcherbatskoi .

To date, more than 30 different works and edited volumes have been published.
