The Library of the City of Pilsen ( Knihovna města Plzně ) functions as the city library in the West Bohemian city of Pilsen and also operates a mobile library on a bus, the "Bibliobus". She also manages nine branch offices in the various parts of Pilsen. With a total of 400,000 books, it is the second largest library in the city after the Pilsen Region's Scientific Library .

history

In 1874, the Pilsen City Council decided to establish a public library . The library was opened on January 1, 1876. After several moves, most recently to Bedřich-Smetana-Straße 13, the number of readers quickly increased to 23,000. Up to 1900, half of the books were purchased in German and half in Czech, in the same year the city took over the costs for the purchases, which had to be met through donations and membership fees.

There was already a mobile library in Pilsen from 1954 to 1958, but this was discontinued due to the expansion of the normal library network. In 1996 the operation was restarted with a new bus containing 3500 books and 42 magazines and the surrounding villages and suburbs are supplied.
