The Scientific Library of the Plzeň Region ( Czech Studijní a vědecká knihovna Plzeňského kraje ) is the largest library in Plzeňský kraj and is supported by it. She lives in the former Dominican monastery in Pilsen .

history

The library was founded in 1950 as the “State Study Library” ( Státní studijní knihovna ). The foundation of the three Pilsen universities was an important impetus. In 1950 the library of the Municipal Historical Museum, founded in 1878, and books from numerous donations formed the basis of the holdings. At the beginning of the 1950s, the library received the confiscated collections of books from the monastery libraries by the communist regime. In this way the library was able to acquire a significant historical book stock.

Two major church libraries were also incorporated. On the one hand it was the historical holdings of the parish library of Planá , and on the other hand it was the important library of the Pilsen archdechany. Since its establishment, the library has had the right to deposit copies (initially only on request, from 1963 a general one) and from 1963 onwards it obtained all literature from Czechoslovakia. In 1996 the legal deposit was restricted to periodicals and regional literature. In 1996 the library was handed over by the State of the Pilsen Region.

Stocks

Holdings of all scientific subjects, but also popular literature and fiction as well as other sources of information are systematically collected. As of December 31, 2008, the library had 1,774,958 holdings. In 1995 the "Austrian Library" was opened and in 1998 the "German Library" of the Goethe Institute . In 2002 the "English Library" supported by the British Council was taken over. The historical inventory now includes 20,000 inventory units, including 461 manuscripts, 356 incunabula and around 15,000 historical prints from the years 1501–1800.

A collection focus is on regional West Bohemian literature.
