Libraries
Library ( Greek βιβλιοθήκη ) referred to a book collection or a storage container for scrolls or books (see ancient libraries ).
The term is commonly used as the title or part of the title of several ancient compilations, namely:
- Libraries of Apollodorus , a mythographic collection (presumably) from the 1st century AD, wrongly attributed to the grammarian Apollodorus of Athens ,
- Library (Diodor) , an ancient universal history in 40 books by Diodorus Siculus ,
- Bibliotheca or Myriobiblon , a work on the history of literature by the Byzantine patriarch Photius from the 9th century, in which Photius critically summarized the content of 279 books.
