Bidnija

Bidnija is a small town in the north of the island of Malta . It is located in the municipality of Mosta and borders on San Pawl il-Baħar and Mġarr . With around 300 inhabitants, Bidnija is the second smallest settlement in Malta before Mdina . It extends over 6.4 km².

history

The olive trees , called Bidni in Maltese , to which the place name goes back, are said to have grown there for more than 2000 years. You are under special protection. Ancient cart tracks can be found nearby , which also indicate that this area has been inhabited for several thousand years.

church

Bidnija Church

The local church was built by the residents themselves under the direction of the stonemason Salvu Zahra. Its foundation stone was laid in 1920, and construction was completed two years later. The small church is under the patronage of the Holy Family of Nazareth. The altar painting is by Ġanni Vella (1885–1977), a sculpture of the Holy Family was created by Wistin Camilleri (1885–1979).

The patronage festival takes place on the 3rd Sunday in July.

economy

The majority of the inhabitants live from agriculture in the fields around the village. The small farms are usually passed on to the grandchildren.

Personalities of the place

The journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia (1964–2017) lived in Bidnija , where she was also murdered.
