The World Commission on Protected Areas ( WCPA ; German " World Commission for Protected Areas ") is one of six IUCN commissions . The WCPA is the world's largest and most recognized organization for nature and landscape protection areas . The WCPA has over 1,700 members in 140 countries.

history

The Commission's direct predecessor, the Provisional Committee on National Parks , was set up in 1958 during an IUCN General Assembly in Greece . The aim was to improve international cooperation in relation to national parks and similar institutions. The committee included representatives from Africa, Asia, North America, Latin America and Europe. The American zoologist Harold Jefferson Coolidge (1904–1985) took over the presidency. In 1960 the committee became a permanent commission called the Commission on National Parks . Coolidge held the leadership until 1966, when he became President of the IUCN. In 1975 the commission was renamed the Commission on National Parks and Protected Areas . The number of members had risen from 15 to 100 by this time. After the approval of the IUCN Congress in Montreal, it was renamed the World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) in 1996 . This year the organization had around 800 members, in 2004 there were 1,500. After that, the number of members decreased to 1,200 in 2009.
